Reinwald off to Junior Olympics after 5K victory

Julie Reinwald, 17, logged her last hard run before heading to the Junior Olympics to compete at Des Moines, Iowa, by winning the women's division at the Summer Sizzler 5K in 20:17. Reinwald, who was to board a bus at 11 p.m. Saturday for the long drive to Des Moines, will be running Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the event. The Arlington Bowie senior is not expecting to sleep much on the bus, but she'll have several days to recuperate before her competition in the 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 4x800 begin. ``I'm taking my own pillow,'' she said in hopes that might help her sleep.

In the men's division, winner Ken Hall of Colleyville received an unexpected running partner when Joe Beisner of Dallas joined him and ran the 3.1 miles with him. Beisner was in the middle of a two-hour, 30-minute training run. ``He said he was training for the Memphis Marathon,'' Hall said. Beisner was throwing in a tempo run of about a 5:30-minute-a-mile pace and Hall matched the effort as he finished in 17:01. Though it wasn't Hall's best effort, he masters runner finished almost a minute ahead of his nearest challenger.

Runners were greeted by a mostly overcast sky, but also high humidity at their trek through the trees at River Legacy Park. They easily beat an approaching rain storm, though several driving west afterward had to deal with heavy rain.
